Cold-formed steel and its forming process

23-03-2022

Cold-formed steel is widely used because of its energy saving and environmental protection characteristics. It uses less steel to complete the specified load, and no longer completely depends on increasing the use of plates or improving the mechanical properties of the material to meet the load. requirements, but to improve the mechanical properties of the section steel by changing the section shape of the section steel product.

Cold-formed steel first originated in 1838. Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom used presses or cold-drawing machines to produce individual steel products, which was the prototype of the cold-formed steel unit. In 1910, the United States took the lead in building a cold-formed steel unit, which resulted in the continuous cold-formed forming process.

The general cold-bending forming process includes sheet forming, roll forming, continuous forming and joint forming.

1. Sheet forming

The single-sheet forming process is to cut the sheet into a specified length in advance, and then send the sheet to the forming machine through the material selection roller. The profiles after rolling can be directly collected and put into storage, especially suitable for products that are easily deformed after the sheet is formed, and are mostly used for small batch production. Its advantages are simple equipment, low investment and small footprint.

2. Roll forming and continuous forming

The process of roll forming and continuous forming is basically the same, the difference is that the joints of the continuously formed sheets must be welded, so that the sheet can be continuously formed and processed; the roll forming is a single roll supply. The equipment investment and floor space required by these two processes are relatively large.

3. Joint molding

The joint forming process is a forming process for processing special steel. The section steel has special requirements for the forming process and requires complex forming equipment, which is suitable for the processing of high-strength plates. The equipment requirements are complex and the investment is high.

With the continuous development of science and technology, cold-formed forming technology has been widely used for its energy saving, environmental protection, high efficiency and other characteristics, and cold-formed steel products have also been widely used in many industries such as construction, bridges, vehicle manufacturing, container production, machinery manufacturing use has played a huge role.
