A grinding wheel is a cutting tool with many extremely hard abrasive grains bonded by a bonding agent. The hard, angular particles on the surface of the grinding wheel are called abrasives and play a cutting role. The bonding material that holds the abrasives together is called the bonding agent. There are many gaps between the abrasive and the bonding agent, which play a role in dissipating heat and holding the abrasive chips. Abrasives, bonding agents and voids form the three elements of the grinding wheel structure.


In order to enable the grinding wheel to grind properly, the working surface of the wheel is generally dressed to form numerous micro-edges of equal height, which act as grinding edges.


During the grinding process, the micro-edges of the grinding grains are constantly changing, from peak sharpness to bluntness, and as the blunted grains continue to be ground, the force acting on the grinding grains increases. Sometimes the pressure on the abrasive grain exceeds the bonding force of the bonding agent and the grain falls off in vain; sometimes the pressure on the abrasive grain does not yet exceed the bonding force of the bonding agent, but is sufficient to break the grain itself and form a new sharp edge. The blunted abrasive grain is broken or falls off on its own, and a sharp abrasive grain emerges to keep the original cutting performance of the grinding wheel.


The self-sharpening of the grinding wheel is a unique property of the grinding wheel and has a great impact on grinding. The quality and productivity of grinding is directly influenced by its handling.


As there is no exact geometric angle for each grinding grain on the wheel, the selection of the grinding wheel is complicated. The selection of a general grinding wheel is mainly based on the characteristics of the grinding wheel.
