Hydrogen can be produced using a variety of processes and energy sources, and the industry often distinguishes by color, such as gray hydrogen, blue hydrogen, and green hydrogen. Among them, hydrogen that meets the carbon emission threshold of low-carbon hydrogen and meets the production energy as a renewable energy source can be defined as "green hydrogen".

The areas with the greatest potential for emission reduction at the application end of the green hydrogen industry are metallurgy and transportation. According to the assessment, by 2050, clean hydrogen can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 5~6 billion tons per year through the application of chemical industry, transportation, manufacturing and other fields. This represents about 15% of all green technology emissions reductions by 2050. Among the many terminal applications, hydrogen steelmaking in the metallurgical field, ground transportation fuel cells and synthetic fuel applications in the transportation field have the largest emission reduction, and the annual emission reduction potential of the three major application fields accounts for about 3/4 of the annual emission reduction potential of the green hydrogen industry.
